Southwest Center for Independent Living Supports the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)
Last December the Senate failed to ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) by 5 votes. The CRPD has bi-partisan support and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has recently made the treaty a priority by holding two hearings, the first took place on November 5th and the second hearing was held November 21st.
There are 57.8 million Americans with disabilities and 5.5 million disabled American veterans. Worldwide there are 1 billion people with disabilities, ratification of the CRPD will provide individuals with disabilities similar rights as those we enjoy in the United States under the Americans with Disabilities Act and other disability rights laws.
Ratification of the CRPD is supported by hundreds of disability organizations, civil rights groups, faith organizations, veterans groups, and major busines groups including the Chamber of Commerce.
