Gary Maddox, SCIL Chief Executive Officer presents the SILC award to Felicia Wyman

Felicia Wyman of Springfield is a recipient of a State Independent Living Council (SILC) College Scholarship award for 2012. Wyman was awarded a total of $1,000 to help with college expenses. The SILC who contributed $750 in combination with a $250 donation from Southwest Center for Independent Living (SCIL).

Winning the award was quite an accomplishment due to the number of applicants across the state for only two awards. Felicia’s volunteer work sharing her experiences with youth with disabilities in the hospital who have sustained similar injuries allowed her to shine above the many applicants.

Felicia was involved in an auto accident in May 2007. She was later diagnosed with a C-7 Spinal Cord injury. She says she was lucky in that she has more arm and hand dexterity than most with that kind of injury.

When she feels the need for comfort and courage, Felicia reads an inspirational bible verse, Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

She is pursuing a degree in Social Work at Missouri State University and will begin her senior year in the fall. After graduating with her Bachelor’s Degree in the spring she will then begin working on her Master’s Degree. Ultimately, Felicia’s goal is to work in a hospital setting where she hopes to work with and help people with disabilities.

The staff at SCIL congratulates Felicia in this honor and wishes her the best of luck in her educational endeavors and career in Social Work. Her determination as a role model and someone who lives the Independent Living philosophy and movement will lead her to touch many lives in her unique way.
