It often helps to talk with someone who also has a disability, especially one like yours. This is what Peer Support is about. The majority of the staff and board of directors at the Southwest Center for Independent Living (SCIL) has a disability. We also have trained volunteers with various disabilities that will visit with you about your feelings, concerns, and goals or just to share practical advice about living with a disability because they have experience with it.

SCIL presently hosts a wide variety of support and recreational groups and can recommend other support groups within the community.  Group description available below. Specific dates and how to register available on the Events page.

Social Club – Springfield

  • Purpose: Group of individuals with physical disabilities of all ages to network and share information with activities including crafts, movies, outings and fundraisers. Quarterly activity list available.
  • Meets: Weekly Wednesday
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm

Social Club – Branson

  • Purpose: Group of individuals with disabilities of all ages and disabilities to network and share information. Meetings are held at a variety of locations, including many fun outings.
  • Meets: Monthly 4th Thursday
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm

  • Purpose:  Group of individuals with physical disabilities of all ages to network and share information with activities including crafts, movies, outings and fundraisers.

Social Club – Polk County

  • Purpose:  Group of individuals with physical disabilities of all ages to network and share information with activities including crafts, movies, outings and fundraisers.

 Craft Group

  • Purpose: Individuals with disabilities of all ages learn crafts.
  • Meets: Monthly 3rd Thursday – please RSVP
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm

Sewing Club

  • Purpose: Individuals with disabilities of all ages learn various sewing techniques. Basic skills to more complicated projects.
  • Meets: Monthly 2nd Tuesday – please RSVP
  • Time: 1-4 pm

Chose to Move

  • Purpose: Networking and information sharing for those people who have transitioned out of a nursing home into the community and those who want to transition back into the community.
  • Meets:  Monthly, Last Friday
  • Time:  3:30 – 6:30pm

Day at the Range & Outdoor Adventure Fair

TEAM Access

  • Purpose: Self advocates meet and get out into the community to identify barriers, and then colloborates with the business or entity to make changes leading to a more accessible community for all.
  • Meets: Varies

Post-Polio Group

  • Purpose: The group has been meeting at SCIL since 1988 and includes discussing or having speakers on medical treatments, medical aids, events, conventions and local and national resources focused on Polio. Members enjoy networking and sharing resources and information.
  • Meets: Even Months, 3rd Monday
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm

Women Inventing Tomorrow Group – WIT

  • Purpose: Support group for women with any disability
  • Meets: Even Months, 1st Thursday

Your Life Youth Group

Springfield

  • Purpose: Youth with disabilities life skills class for ages 14-25 and any disabilities. The high school group meets alternate weeks from the post high school group. Enrollment for Your Life begins at the start of each school semester, August and January.
