About Us » What is Independent Living
"Consumer choice, autonomy and control define the Independent Living Movement. The independent living philosophy holds that individuals with disabilities have the right to live with dignity and with appropriate support in their own homes, fully participate in their communities, and to control and make decisions about their lives."
-From the National Council on Independent Living
Individual Control: “Nothing About Me,Without Me”
The concept that people with disabilities know their needs best and have the right to make decisions regarding their daily lives defines Independent Living. Consumer or client control allows people with disabilities to make the decisions that affect their lives, the power to decide which services they want and set their own goals for increased independence.
At Southwest Center for Independent Living (SCIL), a majority of both the Board of Directors and the staff have disabilities. This element of our organization gives a perspective of understanding for the needs for individuals with disabilities. SCIL has a Consumer Advisory Council consisting of consumers who are willing to share their opinions about what services are needed for people with disabilities. At SCIL it’s all about teamwork.
