Disability Information  & Referral

Southwest Center for Independent Living (SCIL) responds to thousands of requests for disability information and/or referral (I&R) each year. Available at no charge, I & R services answer questions relating to any disability issue for the disability community, the general public, businesses, media and other organizations.  SCIL staff can research many topics on behalf of consumers.

The center furnishes information on financial assistance, health care, housing, Medicaid, social security, transportation, and other resources to mention a few.  If necessary, we make a referral to other appropriate agencies for services we do not provide.

In addition to serving individuals one-on-one, SCIL staff works diligently in the community to provide disability outreach and education.

Community Presentations

SCIL staff as well as the volunteers on our "Close-Up Panel" will gladly make a presentation to your group or business at no charge. A few of the topics you might be interested in are: Disability Sensitivity, Disability Laws, SCIL Services, Accommodating the Employee with a Disability, and Access in the Home. We will tailor the presentation to your group and particular needs.

Disability Law Presentations

There are many laws affecting people with disabilities that staff can provide technical consultation and explanation including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Fair Housing Act, The Rehabilitation Act, Air Carrier Access Act, and others for individuals or groups.

Resource Library

SCIL has a library of disability materials, including books, articles, videotapes, and cassette tapes that may be used for reference during our business hours.

Access Surveys

SCIL performs both architectural and programmatic surveys of businesses, schools, apartment complexes, and government entities. Most surveys are fee-based and include a complete written report of findings. Our Access Team will also assist in determining the most cost-effective solutions to any barriers you might have and assist in meeting compliance with existing disability laws. Call us for friendly assistance!
