It often helps to talk with someone who also has a disability, especially one like yours. This is what Peer Support is about. The majority of the staff at the Southwest Center for Independent Living (SCIL) has a disability. We also have trained volunteers with various disabilities that will visit with you about your feelings, concerns, and goals or just to share practical advice about living with a disability because they have experience with it.

Support and Recreational Groups

SCIL presently hosts the following support and recreational groups and can recommend other support groups within the community. Your Life Youth Group

  • Purpose: Youth with disabilities life skills class for ages 14-24 and any disabilities. The high school group meets alternate weeks from the post high school group. Enrollment for Your Life begins at the start of each school semester, August and January. 
  • Meets: Weekly Monday
  • Time: 4-5:30 pm

Social Club

  • Purpose: Group of individuals with physical disabilities of all ages to network and share information with activities including crafts, movies, outings and fundraisers. Quarterly activity list available.
  • Meets: Weekly Wednesday
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm

Women Inventing Tomorrow Group - WIT

  • Purpose: Support group for women with any disability
  • Meets: Bimonthly 1st Thursday 
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm

MDA Resource Group

  • Purpose: Support group for all individuals and caregivers of people with neuromuscular disease
  • Meets: Monthly 2nd Tuesday 
  • Time: 2-4 pm

L.O.O.P. Advocacy Group – Legislative Organizing Opportunities Project 

  • Purpose: Self advocates meet to discuss local, state and federal legislation and how it might affect people with disabilities. Learn how to advocate and gain the knowledge need to be effective.
  • Meets: Monthly 2nd Friday
  • Time: 11am-130pm

Post-Polio Group

  • Purpose: The group has been meeting at SCIL since 1988 and includes discussing or having speakers on medical treatments, medical aids, events, conventions and local and national resources focused on Polio. Members enjoy networking and sharing resources and information.
  • Meets: Bimonthly 3rd Monday
  • Time: 1-3 pm

Circle of Friends Craft Group

  • Purpose: Individuals with disabilities of all ages learn crafts.
  • Meets: Monthly 3rd Thursday – please RSVP
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm

Branson Social Club

  • Purpose: Group of individuals with disabilities of all ages and disabilities to network and share information. Meetings are held at a variety of locations, including many fun outings.
  • Meets: Monthly 4th Thursday
  • Time: 1-3 pm
  • Location: Various locations throughout Stone and Taney counties

Consumer Advisory Committee

  • Purpose: Individuals with disabilities discuss program needs.
  • Meets: Bimonthly 3rd Tuesday
  • Time: 12-2 pm
